DESCRIPTION
The commission consisted of the design and construction of a vacation house on a two acre waterfront lot in Southampton; the project was the second one that we designed and built for the Clients. Primary design considerations included respecting the delicate balance of the wetlands environment, responding to the need for both privacy and openness, and locating the structure to maximize orientation to sun, views and breezes. The geometries of the house are a result of the building envelope dictated by setback requirements. Flat roofs serve as exterior decks for outdoor living areas which capitalize on views of the bay and ocean. Wall penetrations are limited on the public street façade while they are maximized on the private south and east exposures facing the water; the resulting openness blurs the distinction between interior and exterior. The massing and the selection of exterior materials and colors allow the structure to sit in harmony with its natural surroundings.
