RESIDENTIAL RENOVATIONS – CHATHAM, NJ 2

CHATHAM, NJ

NAME: Private Residence
PROJECT TYPE: Alterations and Additions
LOCATION: Chatham, New Jersey SIZE: 3,900 SF Existing / 200 SF New
SERVICES: Architecture and Procurement of Variances

DESCRIPTION

The project involved the design of a “Homework and Therapy” Room for a beautiful autistic boy; the room was created by renovating and expanding an existing screened-in porch. The program also included a Mud Room Vestibule with cubbies for backpacks, coats and boots, remodeling the Kitchen, redesigning the Master Bedroom and Bathroom, and replacing the exterior roofing, siding and trim. The house sits on a non-conforming lot that is undersized for the zone, thus the project required procuring variances from the Chatham Zoning Board of Adjustments.

The crash of the markets persuaded the Clients to build the project in two stages: Construction of the Homework Room and replacement of exterior finishes was carried out first. The gable end of the Homework Room extension mirrors a previous Family Room addition; the desk is built into a bay window to allow for uninterrupted floor space inside of the Homework Room; the ceiling is vaulted to create playful volumes within the room. The entire addition provides a structured environment where the young client feels safe and follows his favorite routines in his own cozy world.
